Furoshiki Eco Gift Wrapping | 3 Easy-Follow Video Tutorials

Watch Debbie Shore's video tutorials for eco-friendly gift wrap ideas using only fabric.

What is Furoshiki? 'Furoshiki' is a Japanese method of using a square of fabric (also called a furoshiki) for gift wrapping or transporting items, including books, clothes and bento boxes. Recently, it’s become very popular around the world as it has not only transformed and added creativity to the art of gift wrapping, but it is also an eco-friendly way of presenting gifts. The cloth can be reused again and again, and because of the clever, decorative wrapping technique there’s nothing needed apart from the fabric square (although a few simple decorations can really make the parcels look extra special).

There are several traditional methods of gift wrapping. I’ve chosen three for you here, but as long as the gift is covered and the fabric secure, feel free to tie as you like!

A square piece of fabric is ideal as it is versatile for wrapping different-shaped packages. If you can put your gift into a box first this will make wrapping easier. For most techniques, the diagonal of your fabric square should be approx. three times the width of your package, so if my box measures 10in (25.5cm) across, the diagonal of the square should be at least 30in (76cm). Always be a little generous if you’re not sure!

Fine fabrics that drape well work best as they are easy to knot and look elegant, but quilting cotton can also be used, although be aware that it may be a little heavy if lined. I’ve included instructions for lining your square (see below), but if you’re not lining yours it’s best to finish off the raw edges. This could be as simple as pinking, overcasting or overlocking, but I think a hem with mitred corners looks professional and works best with cotton fabric that can hold a crease.
