Hanging Storage Pockets | Downloadable Instructions

These cute hanging pockets are an easy storage solution for any room in the house, even the smallest, and they’re quick to make. You don’t even need a pattern.

Do we ever have enough storage? These handy hanging pockets are perfect for your sewing notions, but are also useful in a bathroom, utility room, a kid’s bedroom or even the kitchen to keep small items to hand and organized. By simply changing the theme of the pocket fabric, they can be used anywhere and for anything – as I used a gardening-themed patterned fabric, I thought they would work well to store seed packets.

This is a good beginner’s project, but whatever your skill level you can probably think of several places where the pockets will come in handy, and they won’t take you long to make.

You’ll find plenty of other makes to get you organized on the Half Yard Club website. The Pro Storage Container with Dividers would pair nicely with your hanging pockets, especially if you make them in the same fabrics, and if you’ve got any fabric scraps left over, you could put them together with some other scraps to make the Quick Make: Patchwork Mug Hug.

By the end of this project, you’ll have:

  1. Learned a quick way of adding bias binding to straight and curved edges
  2. Made quick hanging tabs from bias binding with minimal effort
  3. Mastered making a simple but stylish pocket that could be used for other makes too
  4. Added some organization to your home!

Note: use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.

Finished size without hanger: 7 x 22in (18 x 56cm).

You will need:

Equipment

  • Sewing machine with a needle suitable for your fabric choices
  • A little clear multipurpose glue to secure the twine/ribbon hanger
  • Optional: fabric glue stick
  • Optional: spray starch

Materials

  • 45 x 15in (114 x 38cm) of plain fabric for the main part of the hanging pockets and the pocket linings; if your fabric has a directional pattern rather than being plain, for example a stripe, you will need 30 x 23in (76.5 x 58.5cm) of fabric
  • 22 x 8in (56 x 20.5cm) of patterned fabric for the pockets – you may need a little extra patterned fabric if you fussy-cut the pieces, as I did with my duck fabric
  • 80in (203cm) of ¾in (2cm) wide bias binding (1in/2.5cm wide binding will work too)
  • 7 x 22in (18 x 56cm) of fusible craft fleece
  • 8in (20.5cm) long dowel or stick
  • 18in (46cm) long piece of twine or ribbon to hang the pockets
  • 10–11in (25.5 x 28cm) circle template – a plate works well

Cut:

  • Three patterned and three plain rectangles, each measuring 7 x 6½in (18 x 16.5cm) for the pockets and pocket linings
  • Two plain pieces each measuring 7 x 22in (18 x 56cm) for the main section and its backing
