Suitable for beginners, sew Debbie Shore's cosy made-to-measure quilted hot-water bottle cover.
Create a cosy, made-to-measure quilted hot water bottle cover with Debbie Shore’s easy-to-follow sewing pattern. This beginner-friendly pattern will teach you how to to craft a handmade cover that's tailored to fit your hot water bottle perfectly. You'll learn simple quilting techniques, and you can customise your cover with your favourite fabrics to make it truly yours.
Debbie adds: "I used cotton fabric, although fleece would work well and be even more snuggly! (You could even upcycle an old sweatshirt if you have one.) I also made the template quite generous, as the cotton fabric I used has no stretch. If you use a stretchy fabric such as fleece, make the template just 1in (2.5cm) larger than the bottle, rather than the 1½in (4cm) recommended in the instructions."
Please read the instructions that come with or are printed on your hot water bottle. Generally they’re not recommended for children under the age of 5, you should not use boiling water, and you should only fill the bottle to two-thirds capacity and then expel any air left inside.
Note: Use a ½in (1.25cm) seam allowance.

You will need:
Equipment
- Hot-water bottle
- Paper and pencil to make a template
- Ruler and erasable fabric marker pen
- Paper and fabric scissors
- Sewing machine
- Optional: tacking/basting spray
Materials
Note: The hot-water bottle featured measures 7½x 13in (19 x 33cm); the fabric amounts may be slightly different if your bottle is a different size.
- 20 x 20in (51 x 51cm) of outer fabric: I used a cotton print
- 20 x 20in (51 x 51cm) of lining fabric: I used a plain cotton
- 20 x 20in (51 x 51cm) wadding/batting: I used 80/20 cotton/polyester
- Optional: 12in (30cm) of ½in (1.25cm) wide ribbon to decorate
