Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Quilt these DIY, sustainable and colourful placemats by TV sewing personality Sarah Payne! Download the pdf instructions for free and bust your jelly roll stash!
This guest designer projects features two different ways to make some lovely, colourful patchwork placemats by Sarah Payne! This is a great way to use up scrap fabric or any jelly rolls in your stash.
Sarah is a freelance quilting teacher, designer, TV demonstrator some of you may know from Create & Craft. We're very glad to have her contribution to the Half Yard Sewing Club!
Sarah says...
'Making placemats is a great way to test out styles and techniques without using too much fabric because they are small and quick to produce. Also, there are no rules to say that all the mats need to match, so you can really have a play! This project is also a great way of using up scraps or pieces of jelly rolls that you have left over because it uses 2½in (6.5cm) wide strips. This could be a nice project to practise your hand piecing as well as your hand quilting skills.
This project uses equilateral triangles: these are triangles where the sides and the angles are all equal. This means that we don’t have to worry about whether we are sewing our triangles together correctly, because they always fit! Equilateral triangles are usually called 60º triangles in quilting, to differentiate them from 45º triangles or half square triangles. The fabulous thing about 60º triangles is that they can easily be used to make other shapes – two triangles make a 60º diamond, three can make a half hexagon, six will make a hexagon. Knowing how to cut your equilateral triangles is an invaluable skill for the first-time quilter to pick up as soon as they can!'
Expert help
'Avoid pressing the triangles after they are cut and before they are sewn together, as it can stretch the bias edges'.
By the end of this project, you'll have
- Become more confident in hand piecing
- Mastered cutting equilateral triangles
- Made your own bias binding
Finished size: 16½ × 12½in (42 × 32cm)
This project can be found in Sarah's book Sarah Payne's Quilt School (2019).
