Get ready for work or school with Debbie Shore's over-shoulder laptop bag pattern.

Whether you’re carrying a laptop to work or just using it as a useful shoulder bag, there’s plenty of room in this bag to keep you organized. It has a large zipped box pocket on the front and an inside patch pocket that you can divide up to secure any specific items you know you want to put in there; it’s padded with fleece, too, to help protect your laptop and. I’ve designed two sizes of bags to fit most laptop sizes.

Choose a sturdy fabric such as denim or canvas for your bag outer, and here’s a quick tip: a patterned fabric is more forgiving than a plain as wobbly stitches won’t stand out so much!

I’ve used two zips for the larger bag as very long zips can be difficult to get hold of, but we’ll join them up to meet in the middle, so that they won’t be any more difficult to insert than a single zip.

Finished size:

• Larger laptop bag: 12½x 17½ x 2in (32 x 44.5 x 5cm)
• Smaller laptop bag: 14 x 10½ x 2in (35.5 x 26.5 x 5cm)

Note: Use a ¼in 5mm) seam throughout unless otherwise stated.

You will need:

• Sewing machine
• Fabric shears
• Rotary cutter, quilting ruler and cutting mat
• Zipper foot

Materials

FOR A LARGE (15 x 11in OR 38 x 28cm) LAPTOP:

• Materials – 
  • 26 x 57in (66 x 145cm) of outer fabric: a sturdy fabric such as denim or canvas works best
  • 23 x 57in (58 x 145cm) of lining fabric
  • 39 x 39in (1m x 1m) of fusible fleece
  • Two 14in (36cm) bag zips
  • Two 12in (30cm) pocket zips
  • Two 1in (2.5cm) swivel clasps
  • Two 1in (2.5cm) D-rings
  • 1in (2.5cm) slider
• Cut –
  • Your pattern pieces (laptop bag front and back plus the front pocket) 
  • Two outer and two lining pieces each measuring 23½ x 1½in (60 x 4cm) for the bag zip panels
  • One outer and one lining piece each measuring 37½ x 2½in (95 x 6.5cm) for the bag gusset
  • One outer fabric piece measuring 19½ x 1¼in (49.5 x 3cm) for the pocket zip panel
  • One outer fabric piece measuring 25½ x 2½in (65 x 6.5cm) for the pocket gusset
  • One outer and one lining piece each measuring 14 x 9in (36 x 23cm) for the inside pocket: the inner pocket piece is almost the same as the outer pattern piece, just without the corners rounded, so you could use the template but then straighten the corners if you wish
  • Two outer pieces each measuring 3 x 4in (7.5 x 10cm) for the D-ring tabs
  • One piece of outer fabric measuring 4 x 40in (10 x 102cm) for the strap

FOR A SMALL (13 x 9.5in or 33 x 24cm) LAPTOP:

• Materials –
  • 24 x 60in (60 x 150cm) of outer fabric: a sturdy fabric such as denim or canvas works best
  • 20 x 60in (50 x 150cm) of lining fabric
  • 39 x 39in (1m x 1m) of fusible fleece
  • 22in (56cm) bag zip
  • 18in (46cm) pocket zip
  • Two 1in (2.5cm) swivel clasps
  • Two 1in (2.5cm) D-rings
  • 1in (2.5cm) slider
• Cut –
  • Your pattern pieces (laptop bag front and back plus the front pocket) 
  • Two outer and two lining pieces each measuring 21½ x 1½in (55 x 4cm) for the bag zip panels
  • One outer and one lining piece each measuring 29½ x 2½in (75 x 6.5cm) for the bag gusset: I actually joined two shorter strips together, which measured 15in x 2½in (38 x 6.5cm), to save on fabric
  • One outer fabric piece measuring 17½ x 1¼in (44.5 x 3cm) for the pocket zip panel
  • One outer fabric piece measuring 21½ x 2½in (54.5 x 6.5cm) for the pocket gusset: I actually joined two shorter strips together, which measured 10¾in x 2½in (27.5 x 6.5cm), to save on fabric
  • One outer and one lining piece each measuring 12 x 8in (30 x 20cm) for the inside pocket: the inner pocket piece is almost the same as the outer pattern piece, just without the corners rounded, so you could use the template but then straighten the corners if you wish
  • Two outer pieces each measuring 3 x 4in (7.5 x 10cm) for the D-ring tabs
  • One piece of outer fabric measuring 4 x 40in (10 x 102cm) for the strap
