Patchwork Drawstring Bag | BAG WEEK | Rebecca Tickle Variation

This is the easiest project in the ‘Bag Week’ collection! Transform a simple quilt block into a trendy and portable drawstring bag. It's also perfect for gifts!

This cute little bag joined the club in its infancy – how far we have come since then, with our seventh anniversary approaching this summer! In celebration of HYSC bags this week, Rebecca Tickle has come up with this fresh variation on the Patchwork Drawstring Bag. A lot of members may not be familiar with this project, and it’s so simple. You could use the bag as a small wash or laundry bag when on-the-go, or it would make a lovely gift.

For this project you’ll need to refer to two different quilt blocks:

  1. Pinwheel Block
  2. Diamond Block

Some words from Rebecca...

‘This was my first time making the Patchwork Drawstring Bag and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked creating the 'pinwheel' and 'diamond' patchwork blocks, but I think my favourite part was sewing all the pieces together and learning how to create the channel for the ribbon/string – it was very satisfying.

All of the steps for this project were well-written and knowing that I could ask for help and advice from Debbie (or any of the other club members) really put me at ease. I'll definitely be having another go at this project in the future!’

Techniques

  1. Half Square Triangles (HSTs)
  2. Rotary cutting
  3. Trimming quilt blocks

HSTs are simple and can be applied to so many different quilt blocks. So, if you’re new to quilting it’s definitely a skill to pick up right away.

Trimming your blocks and units for quilting not only makes it easier and more accurate when you sew them together, but also creates a neat, professional finish.

Expert help

  • Press the seams of your HSTs open to reduce bulk. If you want to keep the seams to one side, make sure they’re toward the darker fabric to keep hidden.
  • Chain piecing your HST units is quicker and saves on thread.
  • To ensure the accuracy of your HSTs, make sure you trim on all four sides.
  • I highly recommend investing in a large cutting mat for all your rotary cutting, so you can make long continuous cuts into your fabric with ease.

Finished size: 12 x 14in (30.5 x 35.75cm)

Note: use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance throughout, unless otherwise stated.
