Block of the Month 2025: Block 10 – Positive and Negative
Easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
This striking two-colour block with a finished size of 12in (30.5cm) seems to leap out of the quilt, with the highly contrasting tones giving it maximum impact.
About the quilt block
Although this block looks fairly complicated it is, in fact, one of the quickest blocks in the quilt to complete. It’s made by creating eight large triangles which are sewn together diagonally to make four square units. It’s the placement of these squares which give it the 3D effect. You’ll be working on the diagonal, so a spray of starch along the diagonals will help to avoid stretching.
By making this block, you’ll:
- See how you can create dramatic effects using just two fabrics.
- Practise working with bias-cut edges.
- Add another 12in (30.5cm) block to your collection that could be combined with the other 12in (30.5cm) blocks to create a whole new quilt or used on its own or with plain blocks to make an eye-catching two-colour quilt.
Note: stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.
Unfinished block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square.
