Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Ready to put your quilting tools to good use? This beginner-friendly sewing project from guest designer Sarah Payne is the perfect place to start.
In just one day, you can create a stylish and functional quilted fabric shopping bag – perfect for carrying your fabric haul on your next visit to the craft store. This simple yet satisfying project uses basic quilting techniques and pre-cut fabric squares like charm packs or layer cakes. Whether you're just starting out or looking for a quick weekend make, this DIY fabric tote bag is one you need to add to your to-sew list.
Cutting Instructions
To ensure precision, make sure you iron all the fabric before you cut for accuracy. Cut six 5in (12.5cm) squares from each of the eight different fabrics. You need thirty-two for the bag and sixteen for the handles (forty-eight in total). If you are using the layer cake pieces, then cut each of your 10in (25.5cm) pieces into four 5in (12.5cm) squares.Finished Measurement
The final bag measures approximately 18in (45.5cm) square.Handy Tips For Your Quilted Tote Project
- For this tutorial, we’re using a beautiful Moda layer cake called ‘Freya and Friends’ by Janet Clare, but feel free to mix and match your own fabric selection for a personalised finish.
- When approaching a corner, leave your needle down and pivot the fabric for a nice corner.
- If using a layer cake (10in or 25.5cm pre-cut squares), simply cut each piece into four 5in (12.5cm) squares. A standard 10-piece layer cake will give you exactly what you need.
