Child's Summer Hat with Neck Protector | Sewing Pattern

Debbie Shore's fun children's cap with neck protector is perfect for summer days.

Protect kids from the sunshine with this simple-to-follow hat sewing pattern. I’ve given two sizes to fit ages approx. 1–3 years and 3–8 years. To increase or decrease the size, add or take away ¼in (5mm) from the outer edges of each piece. The elasticated section at the back of the hat ensures a snug fit.

I’ve added a button to the top, which is optional, but it does help to cover any uneven matching of the points on the crown pieces and helps to keep the lining in place.

If you wish, instead of using two layers of the main fabric to make the neck protector, you could use a single layer of towelling fabric, edged with bias binding.

You will find a tailor’s ham useful to press the cap when finished, or you can use a tightly rolled up towel inside the hat.

Note: Use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance unless otherwise stated.

You will need:

Equipment

• Sewing machine
• Fabric shears
• Paper scissors, for cutting out the templates
• Iron
• Safety pin or bodkin, for threading the elastic
• Hand-sewing needle
• Tailor’s ham or rolled up towel, for pressing
• Optional: quick unpick/seam ripper, if you’re adding the elastic at the back of the hat

Materials

• 44 x 18in (112 x 46cm) of outer fabric
• 35 x 9in (89 x 23cm) of lining fabric
• 35 x 9in (89 x 23cm) of medium-weight fusible interfacing: I used Vlieseline G700
• 10 x 7in (25.5 x 18cm) of firm fusible interfacing: I used Decovil Light
• ½in (1.25cm) button
• 6in (15cm) length of ¼in (5mm) wide elastic
