  Try making the seam allowance very slightly wider than the outer bag, and taper to the top where the lining meets the outer fabric, or try putting a few hand stitches through the bottom corners to hold the lining in place...

  I think 40" is a good length for a cross body bag, but yto slinging your tape measure over your shoulder to see whats rtight for you!

Back-tacking is particularly untidy on top stitching around the opening of a bag where the lining, and therefore the yarn used, is a different colour to the main fabric. Thank you.
