I am new to bag making although I do a lot of dressmaking. I have just bought some lovel bee canvas fabric and I am just wondering as its a thicker fabric if I need to put interfacing to strengthen it. I am going to make Debbies Shopper Tote Bag which is on youtube as my first one. Also, can you use an invisible zip for a pocket etc. Thanks
Cassie replied: 23 Jun 20 at 16:51
Interfacing is your preference. Do you want an easily folded bag, use light or no interfacing. If your outside material is see through, use some kind of interfacing. Want the bag to "stand", use a heavier interfacing or foam. The joy of making something yourself is being able to put in whatever you want. If you know how to install an invisible zip, do it! Happy sewing!

Hi well i dont no if this will help you a i have only one machine smocking two or three time, but what i did was fold all the pleats and give them a good steam, then a pin them and also tack them,i did fond that tacking was better than the time i pined, i then use a nice colour thread that would show up on the fabric i was useing ,and machine sewed lines across the pleasts,i did a tester to see how far would be best for the decorative stitchi was going to use on my machine, after that i use a water eraser pen,so my lines was straight, once i did that i use a diffent colour thread to machine the the pattern i had chosen from my machineto sew inbetween the lines,i have also did the line useing cotton elastic or shirring elastic.well i hope this is of some help.happy sewing saty safe and well.

Hi Janet, We do always post all the information on the Half Yard Sewing Club facebook page but it is not a closed group. You can also see members projects there and each album is divided by project. We are currently working on adding a forum alongside this ask a member page. Feel free to ask us at any time if you can't find something on the site.

Hi I?m thinking of making the laminated crossover bag from Debbie?s Build a Bag - Back Pack book. However, I want to use ordinary cotton material rather than laminated material. I?m still a beginner and so not sure what changes I need to consider - though I think I will need to cut the outer fabric a bit bigger to allow for hems? Is that all ? And can anyone advise what size I would need to cut the outer fabric to? thank you

I?ve made the Tie Pocket one from the Build a Bag Back Pack book for my two great nephews who are 6 & 9yrs - I did one in Harry Potter material and the other in football material. I think they look ok for size (birthdays are this week and in a fortnight so I?ll hear soon) x

Hello, I'm in need of a new bag to take my lunch and drinks, and some other items to my work. I only bring one bag to work, so no purse. So I def will need some pockets. I would like the fabric to be washable on the inside and rainproof?on the outside. Do you have any recommandation of fabric that is easy to work with? And maybe an easy patern, since I'm only a beginner ?? ? thank you

I think you'll struggle to find rainproof fabric, the seams will allow water through if the bag is soaked, a laminated fabric or a faux leather would work best for the outside, then try pul for the inside, that's a soft laminate like you'd find on a baby changing mat. Adding pockets to this months bag would work, I'm afraid I don't have a specific pattern for a lunch bag at the moment but I'm sure any bag of the right size could be adapted!
