Make a simple patchwork quilt block that features an abstract basket of flowers.
What is a split quarter square triangle? This quilting unit is made by combining one half-square triangle with two quarter-square segments. This process splits a standard quarter-square triangle in half, resulting in two distinct triangular shapes within a single square unit. This technique is commonly used to create intricate quilt patterns, thanks to its unique asymmetrical design. If you need a reminder of how to tackle split quarter square triangles, separately from the project, you can take a look at the technique on the website here. However, as we'll be doing lots of cutting in this month's block, I'll show you how to apply the techniques for both half square triangles and split quarter square triangles to the design below.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat
- Quilting ruler
Materials
- Fabrics (see my Introduction to the 2020 Block of the Month). From these, you will need:
- Two 6½ x 2½in (16.6 x 6.5cm) rectangles in background (BG) fabric
- Three 2½in (6.5cm) squares in BG
- Three 2½in (6.5cm) squares in PAT 2
- Cutting instructions for the following units are detailed within the step-by step instructions, but are provided here for reference:
- Two Half Square Triangles (HST) each in PAT 5 and BG
- Two HSTs each in PL 4 and BG
- Two HSTs each in PL 3 and BG
- Two HSTs each in PAT 2 and BG
- One HST in PAT 5 and PL 3 (you’ll be discarding one HST)
- Two Split Quarter Square Triangles each in PAT 5, PL 3 and BG (each pair should have one that is mirror imaged)
- Two Quarter Square Triangles (QST) in PL 2, PL 1 and BG
