Sarah's Choice Block of the Month #3 | Quilt Sew-Along (2023)
Easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
A classic quilt design that incorporates both Flying Geese and Half Square Triangles.
Debbie Shore's quilt block this month features two traditional quilting methods: Flying Geese and Half Square Triangles (HSTs). The Flying Geese units are made up using the stitch and flip method – if you made last year’s Christmas Capers quilt, you may remember doing this for the Flying Geese units in June’s Presents Galore block, and November's Pretty Poinsettia block.
What is the stitch and flip quilting method? The stitch-and-flip method is a quilting and sewing technique used to create precise angled pieces or patchwork without having to cut and sew separate triangles. It is especially common in quilt blocks that require diagonal corners, such as snowball blocks, flying geese, or star points.
Why use stitch and flip?- Avoids the need for cutting and sewing tiny triangles.
- Creates crisp, accurate angles in patchwork.
- Reduces fabric waste compared to traditional piecing methods.
If you need a reminder on how to make up the Half Square Triangles (HSTs), take a look at the technique here.
