Nautical Blocks Tutorial #11 | Quilt Sew-Along (2024)

The bright blocks running across the top of this year’s quilt are suggestive of the semaphore flags used to signal from ship to ship, and of the pinwheels on sticks we see at the beach.

The top row of the quilt features two striking blocks in a nautical style repeated alternately across the width of the quilt. Both blocks are 6½in (16.5cm) square (unfinished), the first featuring Flying Geese units that are set in a pinwheel formation (Block A) and the second featuring half squares, triangles and stripes (Block B). You’ll be making three of each block.

With this block you’ll discover ways to create two useful units quickly – the Flying Geese and Half Square Triangles. You’ll be using a four-at-a-time method to make four identical Flying Geese and a two-at-a-time method for making the Half Square Triangles, which is not only satisfying but will speed up your patchworking too.

The fabrics listed in the Materials are sufficient for all six blocks.

Note: stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.

Unfinished row size: 36½ x 6½in (92.75 x 16.5cm); each block is 6½in (16.5cm) square unfinished
