Bunting and Seaweed Block of the Month #7 and #8 Quilt (2024)

Master the art of half square triangles with part 7 and 8 of Debbie Shore's quilt block sew-along.

This month we have two quilt blocks to complete, both quite simple and fun to make. The eight bunting flags of Block 7 are made using a template, with only one centre-back seam, running from the top (wide) edge to the lower point. You’ll need to make eight flags, and although I’ve listed the colours, you can use your own colour combination if desired, though if you are using the fabric kit, do make sure you will have enough fabric. The bunting flags are secured by a binding strip and added to the quilt top after it’s been quilted. As an alternative to this binding strip, you could use some pretty ribbon or purchase ready-made binding, if preferred.

Block 8 is the Seaweed block. With this block you’ll learn a quick and easy way to make half square triangles, which will be positioned to give the impression of seaweed swaying in the sea’s current. We’re using the four-in-one-go method to produce the half-square triangles. I like to make them slightly oversized, then trim to create perfect units.

Note: stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.

Finished size of Block 7: 4¼ x 4¼in (10.75 x 10.75cm) for each flag of the bunting

Unfinished size for Block 8: 5½ x 14in (14 x 35.5cm)
