Children's Hooded Bath to Beach Poncho Sewing Pattern

Sew Debbie Shore's easy towelling poncho for kids – perfect for after swimming, beach or bath time.

This towelling poncho pattern will make a useful, snuggly cover-up for children. Made from towelling fabric, it’s simple to customise this pattern in any size to fit your fabric dimensions. Debbie has used 1.1 yards (1 metre) of towelling fabric that’s 55 inches (140cm) wide to make a poncho 33½ inches (85cm) long, including the hood, but you can also use a large bath towel if preferred.

This beginner-friendly sewing pattern is designed to fit a toddler or small child, but it’s simple to adjust the size for a baby or a taller child (see steps 1 and 2). You can even use measurements from an existing hood to get the perfect fit. If you prefer a simpler design, skip the animal ears by omitting steps 11 and 12. However, if you choose to add ears to the poncho hood, adapt them for your chosen animal, such as a tiger, monkey, or rabbit. You can also appliqué animal faces onto the hood for a fun, custom touch.

Note: Use a ½ inch seam allowance (1.25cm) throughout, unless otherwise stated.

• Sewing machine
• 6in (15cm) circle template: I used a saucer

Materials

• 39½ x 55in (100 x 140cm) of plain towelling: if you wish to use patterned fabric, note that the pattern will be upside down on the back so it will only work if the pattern is non-directional
• 5yd (4.5m) of 1in (2.5cm) wide bias binding
