Navajo Style Quilt Block Table Runner | Sewing Pattern
Moderate |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Stitch a Navajo inspired table runner with Debbie Shore's easy-to-follow sewing pattern.
The Navajo tribe from southwestern USA are known for their basketry and weaving, with distinctive style and colours that I've tried to emulate in this table runner sewing pattern.
The Navajo tribe from southwestern USA, in and around Utah and Arizona, is known for its basketry and weaving, including its highly prized blankets and rugs. Like many crafting traditions, it has developed and changed over time, but geometric patterns are traditional, and certain colours, including browns and reds, blue from indigo, yellow and black have remained popular. I’ve tried to capture a sense of their vibrant style in this table runner.
The individual blocks will also make stylish placemats – you will need extra fabric to make these – or you could sew more blocks to make a full quilt. For accurate cutting, it’s best to use a rotary cutter, ruler and mat.
The fabric allowances are based on quilting-weight cotton, 44in (112cm) wide. I’ve used black, royal blue mixer, mustard yellow mystic vine cotton and paprika red. Non-directional prints work best for this project, and the fabric amounts in the materials list reflect that, but if you are using a fabric with an obvious pattern, you will need more.
Note: use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.
Finished size: 48 x 24in (122 x 61cm)
