Debbie Shore's hanging caddy is the perfect solution for storing bulky quilting items.
If you're a keen quilter but tight on room in your sewing space, this hanging caddy project is one that you need to add to your 'must sew' list. This sewing project would also make a great gift for a beginner quilter!
The ideal place to store the caddy is on the back of a door, which is often wasted space. It’s important to store mats either flat or so they hang, to prevent them bending (it’s a nightmare to flatten bent mats!). This caddy will hold a 12 x 18in (UK size A3) mat alongside your 24in (60cm) ruler, with space for a 9in (23cm) square ruler, a 12in (30cm) ruler, and small items in the front pockets such as your rotary cutter and spare blades. The two smaller pockets are divided in the centre, while the big pocket is larger on one side to accommodate the cutting mat.
I used firm fleece as my stabilizer, but foam, heavy-weight interlining (such as Decovil I), fleece or any strong stabilizer would work. I used a lightweight canvas fabric, but if you’re using a fine cotton you might want to back it with a medium-weight interfacing to make it stronger. Rulers can be quite heavy!
Finished size: 20 x 22in (51 x 56cm)
Note: Use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance unless otherwise stated.

- Fabric scissors, or rotary cutter and cutting mat
- Sewing machine
- Erasable fabric marker pen
- Optional: tacking/basting spray; hot-glue gun

Important note: the measurements provided here are based on my own equipment; adjust the width of your fabric pieces if necessary to fit your own quilting equipment, but keep the height/depth of the pocket pieces the same as below.
- 20 x 22 (51 x 56cm) firm fleece
- 60 x 39in (153 x 100cm) backing fabric
- For the top of the front and the small pocket: 21 x 15in (53.5 x 38cm)
- For the large pocket: 21 x 15in (53.5 x 38cm) fabric
- For the middle pocket: 21 x 8½in (53.5 x 21.5cm) fabric
- 18in (45cm) length of ½in (1.25cm) round dowel
- 22in (56cm) string or ribbon to hang
