Crazy Patchwork Machine Cover Set | Easy Sewing Pattern

Master the crazy patchwork technique with Debbie Shore's sewing machine dust cover set.

Keep your sewing machine dust-free and your work area tidy with this machine cover and catcher set. The cute mouse can keep your pins organised and pop your scraps into the thread catcher to keep the floor tidy. The handy patchwork pockets on the front of the machine dust cover are created with randomly placed strips of fabric: no patchworking skill required! This technique is referred to as 'crazy patchwork'.

Crazy patchwork (or crazy quilting) is a freeform quilting and sewing technique where irregularly shaped fabric scraps are stitched together in a random, unstructured way. Unlike traditional quilt blocks with precise geometric patterns, crazy patchwork embraces asymmetry, creativity, and embellishments.

Before you start, measure over your machine from front to back and from end to end as you may need to add extra width or length for larger machines.

The boning around the thread catcher helps it to keep its shape. You can use any type or width of boning because it won’t be seen, but standard 3/8in (6–8mm) polyester boning works well or you could use something like stiff packing tape if you don’t have any boning.

Finished size: 18½ x 27in (47 x 68.5cm)

Note: Use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance throughout.

Materials

  • 44 x 23in (112 x 58.5cm) of top fabric with a non-directional pattern – mine is purple spot

  • 44 x 5in (112 x 13cm) of contrast plain fabric – mine is pale blue
  • 24 x 6in (60 x 15cm) of scrap fabric to back the patchwork sections – this fabric won’t be seen so can be any colour (mine is pink)
  • 18½ x 27in (47 x 68.5cm) of single-sided fusible foam stabilizer for the dust cover – fusible fleece would also work well, but gives a softer finish
  • 9 x 16in (23 x 40cm) of fusible fleece for the thread catcher – fusible fleece would also work well but gives a softer finish
  • Approx. 100g toy filler for the mouse
  • Black embroidery thread/floss for the mouse’s eyes and whiskers
