Sewing Room Accessories Set | Printable Pattern With Videos

Make Debbie Shore's portable pressing, cutting and sewing kit, equally useful at home or on the go.

I started out with a plan to make a handy ironing station but soon realized that I could turn it into a complete set that’s ideal if you have limited sewing space at home, or if you want to take your sewing equipment to workshops – you could even take it on holiday! The set consists of an ironing mat, mini-iron storage pouch and a storage folder/carrier that holds an A3 (18 x 12in/45 x 30.5cm) cutting mat, plus there’s a zip-up pouch and coordinating needle case and pincushion. The carrier has two large zip-up pockets for your rotary cutter, other tools and threads, while the zip-up pouch is ideal for storing reels of threads, bobbins or sewing machine feet – or cosmetics and hair accessories! The mini-iron pouch can hold a larger iron than the one I use, and, like the zipped pouch, can be used for storing other items. Do make sure you wait for your iron to cool completely before storing it in the pouch, though!

The ironing pad measures 18½ x 13½in (47 x 34.25cm), but it can be made in any size you like: I keep a small 12in (30.5cm) square pad next to my sewing machine for pressing those smaller seams. Your ironing pad can be used even without removing it from the carrier for some projects.

For the carrier outer, I’ve joined two contrasting fabrics which meant I could make the whole set with three half-metre lengths of patterned outer fabric. If you prefer the carrier in one fabric, you’ll need an extra half metre length of whichever fabric you choose. You’ll also need fleece to add sturdiness to the carrier – I’ve used two layers of fusible craft fleece, but one layer may be enough, especially if your main fabric is on the sturdy side.

The needle case and pincushion are optional but are good ways of making use of leftover fabrics!

Note:use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance unless otherwise stated.

Finished sizes: 19½ x 13½in (49.5 x 34.25cm) for the carry case, 18½ x 13½in (47 x 34.25cm) for the ironing pad, 8½ x 9 x 5½in (21.5 x 23 x 14cm) for the drawstring pouch, 9 x 5in (23 x 13cm) for the zip-up pouch, 3½ x 4in (9 x 10cm) for the needle case and about 4 x 4in (10 x 10cm) for the pincushion.

You will need:

Equipment

  • Sewing machine with a standard foot and optional zipper foot
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and cutting mat
  • Fabric clips
  • Fabric glue stick
  • Erasable fabric marker pen
  • Safety pin or bodkin to thread the ribbon through the pouch channel

Materials

  • Three pieces of fabric, each measuring 44 x 19½in (112 x 49.5cm): I’ve used a floral fabric, one with a design of squares and one of clouds
  • 44 x 39in (112 x 99cm) of lining fabric: mine is plain pink
  • Two 7 x 3½in (18 x 9cm) rectangles of felt for the needle case
  • 48 x 17in (122 x 43cm) of heat-resistant wadding for the ironing pad (80/20 wadding will suffice if you don’t have the heat-resistant type)
  • 29 x 60in (73.5 x 152.5cm) of fusible fleece
  • 19 x 7in (48 x 18cm) of 80/20 wadding for the pouch base insert
  • One 12 x 16in (30.5 x 40.5cm) piece of sturdy card for the ironing pad; if using corrugated card, cut two pieces with the grooves running in opposite directions to prevent the card from bending easily (see step 1)
  • 10 x 7in (25.5 x 18cm) of stiff craft card for the pouch base insert: again, if using corrugated cardboard, cut two pieces with the grain in opposite directions
  • Aluminium foil for the ironing pad
  • Two x 9in (23cm) zips for the carrier pockets
  • 12in (30.5cm) zip for the zip-up pouch
  • Three plastic snap (KAM) fastenings for the ironing pad, or you could use 12½in (32cm) of ½in (1.25cm) wide one-touch fastening, such as Velcro, if you prefer
  • 34in (86.5cm) of ¼in (5mm) wide elastic for the carrier
  • Spring cord toggle for the pouch (not essential but a nice touch)
  • A little toy filler for the pincushion
  • 3in (7.5cm) of elastic cord for the needle-case closure: I used a hair bungee
  • One button for the needle-case closure – the exact size doesn’t matter
  • 27in (68.5cm) of ½in (1.25cm) wide ribbon for the drawstring of the pouch
  • 5in (13cm) of 18in (3mm) wide ribbon for the pincushion
  • Optional: 10in (25.5cm) of 18in (3mm) ribbon to trim the zip tabs on the carrier, and 5in (13cm) of 1/8in (3mm) ribbon for the zip tab of the zip-up pouch
