Summer Wonky Street Pillow

Here is the final cushion or pillow in our seasonal set of Wonky Street pillow covers! I hope you've enjoyed making them as much as I have.

It’s summer on Wonky Street! It’s also time to make another fun pillow or cushion. The houses are bright and cheerful in the sunshine, the bunting is strung out, ready for some outdoor fun, and three-dimensional sunflowers are in full bloom. Go ahead and personalize the scene with additional flowers – the quirkier the better! You can even put in the window-boxes from the spring pillow so you can add even more blooms.

The appliqué is a great way of using up fabric scraps, and it can be applied either with a straight machine stitch or by hand if you don’t want to free-motion embroider.

I’ve used interfacing on the wrong side of my fabric to help stabilize it and prevent puckering when sewing.

Note: Use a ½in (1.25cm) seam allowance throughout.

Finished size: 16 x 16in (40 x 40cm)

You will need:

Equipment

  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric shears
  • Embroidery/crewel needle
  • Free-motion embroidery presser foot
  • Erasable marker pen: avoid air- or water-erasable as you’ll be ironing, and these inks can become permanent!
  • Strong wet fabric glue (I used Gutermann HT2 textile glue)

Materials

  • 16in (40cm) square cushion pad
  • 51 x 34in (130 x 86cm) of natural-coloured cotton
  • Scraps of brightly coloured plain and patterned fabric for the appliqué, including yellow for the sun
  • Brown and green embroidery thread/floss
  • 4 x 2in (10 x 5cm) of brown felt for the sunflowers
  • 2 x 6in (5 x 15cm) of yellow felt for the sunflowers
  • 4 x 2in (10 x 15cm) of green felt for the sunflower leaves
  • Fusible adhesive sheets (I used those by Bondaweb)
  • 17in (43cm) square of lightweight fusible interfacing
  • Machine thread for sewing the cushion and for the free-motion embroidery: use matching thread for the construction of the pillow, a contrast thread for the free-motion embroidery, such as dark grey, and green for the plants in the flower boxes on the fence
