Wilbur is the latest character in the Chumleys collection. He’s a sweet, cuddly little pig, made from polar fleece which is simple to work with and extra snuggly!
Fleece is a very forgiving fabric to work with: stitches are buried in the pile of the fabric, and, as it doesn’t fray, finishing the seams isn’t necessary. The stretch allows your character to be moulded slightly when stuffed but note that the Chumleys are meant to be quite soft and flat: over-stuffing would change the shape and make them firmer. Polar fleece can look similar on both sides but one side may have a slightly longer pile, so make sure you use the same side as the outer fabric each time.
You may like to add a spot of glue (HT2) to eyes and noses to make them extra secure.
A pig is not just for Christmas! I attached Wilbur’s hat in just a few places so that I could remove it after the festive season and keep him on display all year round.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine with a standard foot
- Fabric glue stick
- Hand-sewing needle
- Fabric clips or pins
- Optional: wet fabric glue such as Gutermann HT2
Materials
- 40 x 14in (112 x 35.5cm) of polar fleece (pink)
- 10 x 7in (25.5 x 18cm) of contrast fabric for the inner ears: I used a floral cotton fabric
- 4 x 2in (10 x 5cm) of black felt for the nostrils and eyes
- 2 x 2in (5 x 5cm) square of white felt for the eyes
- White embroidery thread
- Toy filler
For the Christmas hat:
- 6 x 6in (15 x 15cm) square of polar fleece (red)
- 11 x 1½in (28 x 3.75cm) strip of white fleece
- 2 x 2in (5 x 5cm) square of red felt for the holly berries
- 3 x 4in (7.5 x 10cm) rectangle of green felt for the holly leaves
- Small white pom-pom
