Wonky Street Halloween Haunted House Wall Hanging | Sewing Pattern
Easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
This wall hanging makes a fun decoration for Halloween and is a perfect project for practising your free-motion embroidery as everything is meant to be a bit wonky!
Celebrate the spooky season with this fun wall hanging. It will be a lively centrepiece for your festive decorations and it’s fun to make. I’ve used free-motion embroidery to attach the pieces, but if you prefer, you could use a small straight stitch on your sewing machine. If you decide to hand sew, I’d recommend not using the adhesive sheeting as it can be quite difficult to sew through, so secure the pieces in place with basting spray such as 505.
Instead of fabric you could use felt for the appliqué, and either hand sew or machine sew the pieces in place. And, of course, feel free to add your own touches: more bats and spiders, maybe a witch on a broom, ghostly figures in the windows – just enjoy being creative!
If you like this hanging, check out my other Wonky Street projects, such as the Wonky Street Draught Excluder, Wonky House Door Stop, Autumn Wonky Street Pillow and Winter Wonky Street Pillow. In fact, you could make a Halloween Wonky Street Pillow if you like, using the templates from this project and the instructions for the pillow.
Finished size: 11 x 16in (28 x 40.5cm)

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine with a standard foot
- Free-motion or darning foot for your machine
- Fabric shears plus small scissors to cut out the fiddly bits
- Embroidery needle
- Paintbrush
- Erasable marker pen: I use a heat-erasable pen, as water- and air-erasable inks will become permanent when ironed – and there’s quite a lot of ironing in this project!
- Basting spray: I use 505
- Tea bag and/or shadow-coloured watercolour pencil
- 8in (20cm) length of craft dowl rod for hanging
- Optional: multipurpose glue to secure the ribbon to the dowel
Materials
- 11 x 16in (28 x 40.5cm) of background fabric: I used textured light grey
- 15 x 16in (38 x 40.5cm) of backing/lining fabric
- 11 x 16in (28 x 40.5cm) of fusible fleece
- 11 x 16in (28 x 40.5cm) of fusible interfacing to help to prevent the fabric puckering as you attach the appliqué: I used Vlieseline G700
- Small pieces of fabric for the appliqué: use cream or white for the moon and yellow for the windows, green for the grass and black for the bats and cat, orange for the pumpkin and then any spooky colours you like for the houses
- Approx. 6½ x 30in (16.5 x 76cm) of fusible adhesive sheet, such as Bondaweb
- Sewing thread for the free-motion stitching: I’m using black
- Green embroidery thread for the pumpkin stalks and the eyes of the cat and spider
- 56in (142cm) of ¾in (2cm) bias binding: I used black
- Approx. 12in (30cm) of 1/8in (3mm) wide ribbon for hanging
- Optional: quilters gloves to help improve your grip
