Does anyone know why we pull the bobbin thread through when free motion quilting? Is it to tie it in a knot? Also when instructions say sub-cut does that mean just cut? Thank you.
Laura replied: 19 Jan 23 at 10:07
There are several you tube videos on dealing with starting and ending threads when doing free motion embroidery. You pull through the bobbin thread and tie a knot slightly away from your last stitch. Then using a needle you take the two strands of thread back through the end of the last stitch and through the batting but not through the backing fabric. Bring the needle back up again and gently pull the knot through the fabric and then snip the ends so they disappear. Sub cut is cutting from a material that you have already cut or prepared ?there are short videos on You Tube for this as well..just put quilting sub cut in the search engine. Hope this helps.

Hi everyone. I'm doing the block of the month quilt this year - first time ever so fingers crossed. So far so good. My question is - Debbie demonstrated the sashing on one of her lives towards the end of last year (I think) does anyone know exactly which live it is? I've gone through the videos on YouTube but yet to find it.
Juliet replied: 17 Jan 23 at 18:28
Thank you. I'll check it out.

I'm making block 1 and 13 of the QAYG 2023. In the intial instructions it says to purchase a yellow, green and pink thread and a medium grey. I'm assuming that once you've constructed your blocks 1 and 13 and start quilting you'd use the medium grey to free motion quilt on the green and yellow melons and echo quilt on the WW. Otherwise if you used the yellow or green thread on the melons to fmq it would stand out too much on the reverse. First time attempting something like this so any advice appreciated and probably a silly question!
Julie replied: 16 Jan 23 at 17:29
OMG didn't even think of doing that!!! So simple. Thank you so much Debbie :0)

This year's BOTM is my first ever quilting project, so this may be a bit of a silly question, but would it be suitable to cut the sashing for the whole quilt all at once? Cutting things at scale takes up quite a lot of space in my little one-bed flat so I like to try to get as much cutting done as I can in one go. My concern is that I will need to leave aside a portion of the grey to cut the binding at the end. Thanks :)
Laura replied: 17 Jan 23 at 20:44
I think I would consider just completing and quilting my blocks and then binding them all when finished so I can cut the binding all in one go or you could do three months/6 months at a time so that you are not over cutting the binding fabric at the start of the project.

Hi I am new to Debbie?s HYSC. I am making Maddie but don?t know how to transfer her face features onto the fabric for embroidery. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. CarolSews.
Laura replied: 15 Jan 23 at 19:52
If you trace the face onto tracing/baking paper with a pencil then turn paper over ?scribble over the face features on the reverse of the paper (place on a scrap of paper when you do this as the original face could transfer onto the work surface). Then turn over with original facing you..place on the fabric for Maddie?s face and draw carefully over the features. The carbon in the scribble will transfer onto the fabric and give you lines/shapes for you to embroider. I remember doing this technique at school (a longtime ago) for transferring brass rubbings etc. Hope it works for you.

Ok I have download the polar pattern like Megan said but can you not print the pattern do you have to draw it yourself from the measurements
Megan replied: 15 Jan 23 at 17:55
No you don't have to draw it you should be able to print it..

Good morning. I'm looking for recommendations for Eyelet fitting tools please. I have looked on Amazon but there are so many to choose from. Thank you in advance
Celia replied: 19 Jan 23 at 11:14
The very best ones are Kamsnaps. You can find a large selection via The Trimming Shop - not sure of the web address though.
