Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Get creative with this hand-stitched and embroidered festive decoration. It’s so much fun and any stitching wobbles simply add to the handmade look!
About the project
This fun festive decoration is such an enjoyable make, which I’m sure will become a holiday favourite each year! I really loved thinking about what decorations to add, so dig into your stash, see what bits and bobs you’ve got, and get creative with them.
Finished size: 11 x 15in (28 x 38cm)
For embroidery beginners
Don’t worry if you haven’t done much embroidery before – watch the video, where I’ll take you through all the stitches, and you can download the embroidery guide that comes with this project too.
Mindful stitching
Because there are lots of small separate elements to this wall hanging, you can work on it as and when you have time and enjoy the process of hand stitching.
Felt recommendations
I used wool-mix felt for my wall hanging, which is lovely to work with, but any type of felt will do, and if you already have some felt pieces that you bought for another project, then this is the perfect opportunity to use what you already have.
Make it your own!
- Embellish as much as you like, with buttons, bows and fancy threads – I think that the more ‘fuss’ this house has, the better it looks.
- Swap out the trees or the gingerbread people for the trees, mushrooms, snowmen or gnomes from the Buildable Winter Felt Wreath.
- Create a new look by using different embroidery stitches.
- Choose your own colours of felt and embroidery thread.
- Add sparkle with silver threads and sequins.
- Simplify it, if that’s your preference, by leaving off some of the embroidery – this project can be as simply or as busy as you want it to be.
Involve the whole family
Who’s to say this is a one-person project? You could cut out the pieces and then ask other family members to work on one or two of the elements each. It will be a real family treasure when each person can point to it and say: “I made that!.”
By the end of this project, you’ll have:
- Have had loads of fun!
- Learnt some new embroidery stitches – or practised them if you’re already an embroiderer: blanket stitch, running stitch, stem stitch, lazy-daisy stitch, cross stitch, straight stitch, backstitch and French knots.
- Created a gorgeous handmade festive decoration.
- Let loose with your creativity.
