Will Maddie and her clothes always be on the HYSC site like the block of the month?
Laura replied: 4 Oct 23 at 17:11
The clothes are gradually being taken down from the site but Maddie will stay there.

Hello all. I will be most grateful if someone can please tell me how to go about making a poncho for my husband. Basically a poncho for a male. I figure that maybe the base of the neck to turn into a V but I am not sure how to go about catering for the width in particular for a male. Perhaps more than a yard of fabric to cater for length especially for a tall man? Thank you in advance for your kind response.

A very basic question I reckon. What is the best /easiest method for sewing around curves please? I am trying to go as slow as possible. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Laura replied: 29 Sep 23 at 10:06
I think we would all like a magical wand for this one especially when topstitching bags etc as the stitching is so visible. The tips I have learnt are, use a machine foot that has a see through/plastic area so you can see where you are stitching, gauge your stitch line from where the needle is entering the fabric as that is where the curve is actually being formed, shorten your stitch if you can as this makes curves easier (not when you are topstitching though as you want a longer stitch for effect), slow down if you need to but continuous stitching gives a smoother curve ( this takes practice), practice by drawing curves on before you sew and keeping to those lines and practice, practice, practice. I am sure that there must be a machine foot that helps to sew curves but I haven?t seen it yet. You can buy guides that you can stick to your machine but I don?t have much success with them and there are lots of You Tube videos that do show techniques that might help. Hope this helps a bit.

After seeing Kimberley?s waistcoat it reminded me of one I made for my husband a few months ago. He kept going on at me to make him something bright. I had batik squares so I sewed them together. He did not want buttons but wanted a mandarin collar. I did a more reserved inside and made it reversible by hiding the seams. I would say just have a go. Join up your scraps and see what you can make

Hi I've just ordered some viscose jersey from Debbie, but am a bit confused as to which machine needle I should use, any help is greatly appreciated - many thanks, Lorraine
Laura replied: 22 Sep 23 at 10:02
As soon as I see jersey in a description I think of a stretchy ?knitted? fabric so I would use a jersey needle as it has a ball point end which doesn?t split the threads which can cause laddering. Debbie has some good tips on sewing stretchy fabrics on this site under tips. If you get the fabric home and it doesn?t feel stretchy or knitted then treat it like viscose and use a new sharp universal needle, again Debbie has tips on sewing viscose in the tips section of this site. Hope this helps.

Hello, Please, regarding the pencil pouch for this month's second project - the zipper insertion. Will an ordinary zipper be able to function properly after splitting the end like suggested in the instructions? I am deathly afraid to try it as in my experience once the zip is split it never functions properly again - it does not close back properly. I would just hate to reach that far only for my project to become ruined. HELP!!!!!. If anyone has a video of your application of the zipper I will be happy to supply my email address for viewing please. Thanks for a speedy response.
Debbie replied: 22 Sep 23 at 14:13
Hi! I've never had an issue with splitting a zip, anyone else had a problem?
